A heavy winter weather on the 20th of December, 1980 was the day a story of mind-bending proportions was born. It was considered a myth; a story too good to be true after many people heard of the remarkable tale of then-19-year-old Jean Hilliard, who was on her way home from a friend's house when she suddenly lost control of her car and swerved, falling into a dike. The unforgiving weather and the blistering snow was too much for any mere mortal to handle. Stranded and left searching for help, Jean embarked on a journey she will never, ever forget in her entire life.

Knowing her car got busted because of the crash, Jean started walking against the punishing frigid wind below zero temperature, as she started to tread the path back from the home of her friend Wally Nelson, which was approximately two miles away. She was determined to get back to her friend's home, and her burning desire helped combat the blistering weather conditions as she finds her way. But due to the extreme weather conditions, it proved too much for Jean to handle, as she collapsed and ended up frozen just about 15 feet from his friend's door. Six hours have passed since her collapse, she was found frozen solid, like a huge block of human ice. Her pupils were obviously dilated, and her eyeballs were frozen, seemingly like a molded statue carved out from ice. Her friend Wally fortunately found her in his driveway and says his friend looked like a frozen meat before he carried her to his vehicle to rush to the hospital. One of the medical doctors who took care of Jean, Dr. Edgar Sather, stated "her body was so frozen that it was impossible to use a thermometer or find a vein to get a pulse." She was then subjected to a heating pad with a 102 degree water temperature. Dr. Edgar's brother, George Sather, who also assisted in treating Jean's condition, said "I can't explain why she's alive. She was frozen stiff, literally. It was a miracle. I thought she was dead, but then we picked up an extremely fain whimper. We knew there was a person existing then." Miracle it was indeed. Doctors believed her chances or survival were slim - very slim, almost none at all. She was a frozen block of ice, and her body temperature didn't even registered on the thermometer. What's extremely mind-bending is her body parts didn't even need to be amputated, as the common medical conditions suffered in minus zero temperatures is frostbite. Jean's mother, Mrs. Erickson gathered the locals in their area and everyone close to the family, asked for a prayer chain in hopes that Jean would survive and eventually make it alive. Soon, hundreds and thousands of people joined the prayer chain, and certainly their prayers were answered, as Jean was given a second chance to live life once again, defying the odds of what fate has dictated. Her legs and feet started to lighten, and regain their natural skin color instead of getting darker and suffering to frostbite. Then, the miracle happened. Jean's arms and hands began to thaw, and by the third day she was able to move her legs. After 49 days of being confined in the hospital, Jean is fully up and running once again and was discharged from the hospital, alive, well, and healthy. Her burning desire twisted the strings of fate, and it was truly a remarkable story that seems too good to even believe, but everyone was glad that Jean was able to make it and live to tell the tale of her epic story. For some extra tips during the harsh winter seasons, here are some important reminders to take note of for your safety:
1st Tip: It's always imperative to carry a survival pack with you whenever you go out in harsh weather conditions. The kit should have blankets, extra clothes, flashlight with batteries, food, water, first aid kit, a candle, emergency flares and a red light. Blankets and clothes keep you warm and other light sources help rescuers see you in the dark.
2nd Tip: Stay in the car. Unless it's totally wrecked, it's a much safer option to stay inside your car and seek help from there instead of treading the punishing weather conditions looking for help. Rescue teams also have a much easier time finding you if you are in a stable location instead of having to wander in search of dire help.
3rd Tip: If the car's still working and you can start it, use the car heater. Run the heater in 10-minute intervals to preserve the gas and make it last longer. It provides you with warmth needed in generally cold conditions.

No one gave her much needed attention when she was a child, constantly she was being bullied because of how she looks and everyone wasn't too kind. But that didn't deter Melanie Gaydos, a 27-year old fashion model who is now living the dream she only thought was impossible when she was a child. When she was little, she was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder that left her bald and without any teeth,which causes growth abnormalities that has spoken out about her determination to break into the fashion industry. Early in her life, it discouraged her and left her feeling unwanted and left out. But she showed grit and determination, and she used it as a stepping stone to pursue her career in modelling. Her story truly is an inspiring one, and you should definitely read her life beyond her physical appearances.

Talking about her symptons, Melanie explained: 'Ectodermal Dysplasia means my pores are very small and I have very little body hair.' She went on: 'I only have three baby teeth at the moment… My baby teeth grew in and then they promptly started decaying.' But despite having the odds firmly stacked against her, the 26-year-old has forged a career as a top fashion model. Melanie explained that her modelling career began shortly after she moved to New York City. After setting up an amateur Model Mayhem account when she moved to New York, she started to get work in front of the camera. And she's really been celebrating success, including starring in the Mein Herz brennt music video for successful German heavy metal band Rammstein. Speaking to Yahoo Style Melanie said: "This year I’ve taken a more active approach in really truly believing in myself and who I am as a person." She explained: "I ended up meeting and starting a lot of my fashion work based off of Craigslist because there were a lot of fashion photographers on there who were looking for models who didn’t have a stereotypical look." It was, of course, difficult for her to merge seamlessly into the fashion industry. "When I go on a photo shoot and there are other industry models there, they normally don’t know what to make of me," she said in the video. "It’s difficult for me in the fashion world, because people think of me kind of as a gimmick." I wore wigs really only for societal purposes,” she said in the video. When asked about how her modeling started, she notes that her boyfriend at the time was a photographer and encouraged her to start: "I only wanted to be photographed by people who understood me." And since then, her life changed in a way she never thought would even be possible. A 360 degree turn, might we say. She fought the disease she was indefinitely born with, despite the odds being so high against her. She fought all the doubters, the naysayers, and the bullies she encountered when she was a child, and now she's living a high point in her life. Melanie’s grace and creativity have landed her in some stellar compositions that highlight her slender body, acute fashion, and bald head. Now she's an inspiring icon to everyone desiring to be a fashion model, all it takes is guts, grit, and determination in achieving the dreams you want to achieve.

Her story truly is an inspiring one, and we should definitely take note of how challenges in life surely isn't insurmountable. Mayor Duterte has stated that the money gathered from smoking fines will be used as charity and donated to help children fight cancer and hopefully avoid causing any more health complications to smokers. He said "Out of your vices, I will spend the money for children with cancer." The House of Hope,is a project of the Waling-Waling Rotary Club of Davao City, which allows children to have temporary homes who have no places to stay in Mindanao. They are provided with care on their cancer sickness. Dr. Mae Dolendo, head of the facility, also provides counselling services to the children and their parents in guiding them toward a better future ahead. He said during an interview sometime last year: "Those who survive the disease come back here every year for the Survivors' Day, an event which the Mayor has not missed," Dr. Dolendo also said that Mayor Duterte spends his free time and even during Christmas Day to interact with the children and provide them with the loving support and strength they so desperately need. The city of Davao is known for it's strict implementations of its rules led by Mayor Duterte, and although the Anti-Smoking Ordinance was in full effect, violators are still caught. roughly about 4,000 of them, paying the fines of P500 when caught in the act.

It prohibits smoking in all public places, and when spotted lighting a cigarette, expect a fine immediately or face three days of apprehension. The ordinance not only applies to the citizens, but also to everyone including tourists and visitors alike. This emphasizes Mayor Duterte's desires for discipline and obedience of his laws in Davao. He said that the new ordinance should help smokers avoid and eventually quit smoking, reducing tobacco use in the city. Duterte also mentioned that future fines collected from violators will continue to be given to the House of Hope to provide light and encouragement to cancer-stricken children that there is hope for a better future. The campaign will continue to express charity services in the city and further expand the campaign in protecting children from harm and giving them brighter days ahead. This is a step in the right direction and will surely benefit both the smokers in quitting their habits and for children to aid their fight in battling cancer. When Joe Landolina was just a 17-year-old high school student, he discovered a breakthrough and developed a lifesaving compound from algae that stops bleeding in just seconds. Now, years after envisioning his work, he is now the owner of Brooklyn-based biotechnology company Suneris, and has started his idea on designing a polymer gel that can be injected at wound sites for immediate clotting. Within 15 seconds of application, VetiGel begins matching the composition of the surrounding tissues, reducing blood flow and sealing up injury. CEO and Co-founder Joe Landolina says he and his team designed VetiGel to be ubiquitous one day. Right now, however, tests on VetiGel have yet to involve human subjects. Their sights are first set on veterinarian clinics, where they can see how animal wounds seal up before ironing out any wrinkles as they approach human tissue. If all goes to plan, Suneris hopes to get FDA approval for the futuristic bandage and bring it to market.
All this is years away, of course. But that doesn’t erase Landolina’s visions of grandeur. “We’re definitely hoping this changes the way the world looks at wound care, not only stopping bleeds but being able to treat burns,” he said. “We could even apply this technology to the regeneration of organs one day.” While all of this is under works, it would be of great help one day if this band-aid goes into production and be of great help to the medicinal field.

This humble man is Abdul Halim Attar, a Palestinian refugee from Yarmouk in Syria, and his daughter is Reem. Roaming the streets of Beirut armed with just pens to make money, his story has impacted people in ways many least expected. His hardwork caught the attention of Mr. Gissur Simonarson, who runs the website Conflict News, and took notice of the humble man's efforts. Mr. Simonarson created a twitter account to seek Abdul and raise funds in hopes of giving light to his dim existence and provide hope for better days ahead. After tweets have been noticed, it struck a chord. With the help of local journalists and activists they found Abdul and started a crowdfunding campaign to offer help and assistance to Abdul and his family,

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees says it needs $5.5bn (£3.6bn) to help Syrian refugees and the countries hosting them - but it has received less than a quarter of that amount.
