Ed Mundsel Bello, 28, was convicted after pleading guilty to publishing disparaging comments about Singaporeans on Facebook and lying to the police twice on Jan. 3 and 4.
In his Facebook post, Bello called out Singaporeans as "loosers (sic) in their own country". "We take their jobs, their future, their women, and soon, we will evict all SG loosers out of their own country", Bello added, saying that Singapore would be the "new Filipino state".
He also inclined that he would be "praying that disastors (sic) strike Singapore and more Singaporeans will die". He will "celebrate" if this happens, he said.
The post ended with the declaration: "REMEMBER PINOY BETTER AND STRONGER THAN STINKAPOREANS."
“Our embassy in Singapore confirmed that he was convicted on Wednesday morning. His lawyer, his sister and an officer of the Philippine Embassy in Singapore were present at the hearing,” said Assistant Secretary Charles Jose, the DFA spokesperson.
The court heard that the police carried out extensive investigations. Six statements were recorded from Bello, and nine from other material witnesses.
Police also seized a computer terminal he allegedly used from a cybercafe at Lucky Plaza. This and two of his mobile devices were sent to the Technology Crime Forensic Branch for forensic analysis.
His employers, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, carried out an inquiry into his online conduct. He persistently denied that he had published the comments. He was later fired.
Bello finally confessed to posting the Jan 2 comments, using his "Edz Ello'' Facebook account at home, after being confronted with evidence.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Kumaresan Gohulabalan said Bello had been regularly commenting on reports and articles relating to Singapore since the middle of last year. These comments included numerous vile, derogatory and offensive posts, which touched on issues of race and nationality.
On Jan 3, his comments were highlighted on The Kaki News Network, a Facebook page primary focused on reporting Singapore-related news with a significant following. It was "liked'' and "followed" by over 30,000 Facebook users.
For promoting feelings of ill-will and hostility between different races or classes of the population of Singapore, Bello could receive a fine of up to S$5,000 or a jail term of up to three years, or both.
Bello was arrested on Apr 7. His passport was confiscated and bail set at SGD10,000. He will be sentenced on Sep 16, 2015.

As if the recent issues OFWs face regarding the tax implementations and opening of their balikbayan boxes by the Bureau of Customs weren't enough, another issue has surfaced and is causing quite the ruckus amidst concerned individuals.
A forwarding company is now facing criticism and accusations after having been discovered to be "selling" balikbayan boxes to some negotiators. In light of the report, the owners of the packages have no idea that their balikbayan boxes were being sold to interested buyers.
In the streets of Silverio compound in Parañaque, a news team discovered a market stall selling imported goods allegedly from Saudi Arabia. Canned goods, home amenities and shoes are seen being sold, along with other products. They also spotted a couple of packages that were still unopened, some of them even bearing the name and the address of the person who the package was supposed to be sent to.
The Department of Trade and Industry warned customers to be aware about their transactions to forwarders, making sure that it is secure and holds valid proof. They said that if there are any complaints to forwarders, customers should visit the DTI to file a case and make actions as soon as possible.

This stirred up quite the controversy, and when the store owner was asked on how she got these packages, she admitted that the boxes were sold by a forwarding company named DXL International. The company claims that the owners of the packages owe the company a debt for more than a year, so they sold the boxes seemingly without the knowledge of the package owners. Archia Legarda, a DXL International Freight Forwarder, said
"More than one year na po yan ngayon nagbibigay po kami ng ultimatum na kung hindi na yan makukuha, ididispose ho namin yan, paano kami makakarecover?"

Balikbayan Boxes From OFWs Spotted Being Sold in a Local Market Stall

The BOC rule was being instituted on grounds of balikbayan boxes possibly carrying undeclared goods for proper taxation. This has sparked people all over the nation with fury and rage. Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has joined the public outrage over the plan of the Bureau of Customs and chimend in with his own words in regards to conducting random inspections of balikbayan boxes, saying it is a form of harassment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
He said “For every OFW, a balikbayan box is the equivalent of his or her love letter to a spouse and the rest of the family. Every item inside that box was bought with a specific person and purpose in mind, bought with the hard-earned money of our modern-day heroes. So if a single item there gets lost, can you imagine how that feels to an OFW who invested so much emotion and money just to get those goods home?”
Marcos noted that the balikbayan box system used by OFWs to send personal goods to their loved ones in the Philippines started during the administration of his father, the late President Ferdinand Marcos, when Section 105 of the Tariff and Customs Code of the Philippines was amended to provide duty and tax-free privileges to OFWs. The latest sample of this was posted by a Facebook page called Ignore Rants, in referral to the issue of the Bureau of Customs in opening balikbayan boxes and implementing taxes which are clearly bloated. A box was delivered from the post-office from London and then the staff decided to open the box. They spotted a Gucci bag, which the staff says a tax is required to be paid. They then searched for the bag online to check its original price, then seemingly found a similar bag with a price of about $1,200. Then they calculated the equivalent tax and resulted in a whopping PHP15,959.00. The package was sent by a family member from London and was ready to be picked up by a relative. Little did they know that their pockets would soon run shallow even before getting a chance to get ahold of their delivered package from their loved ones. The post says even a book is taxed, virtually everything is given a tax which is completely absurd considering how much money the government could collect for just one balikbayan box.
The tax outweighs the original price of the item, and people are calling out the BOC to justify why are there even taxes for balikbayan boxes. For people who are searching for career opportunities and job offers, there is good news, as New Zealand has announced it will open more than 30,000 job opportunities. Along with DOLE, POEA, Filipino, and New Zealand recruiters, they are undergoing talks on how Filipinos could work there and what type of jobs are up for grabs.
New Zealand's rise from the devastating 6.3 magnitude earthquake that hit the country in 2011 has been well-documented. About an estimated worth of Nz$200 building projects are expected to start now and between 2020. Because the project is so big, the country is in need of more skilled workers to aid them in accomplishing the said project within the timeframe they indicated.
Kurt Reed of the AFW Trades in New Zealand said that they need "Very very hardworking, productive people with good english skills, and good technical skills."
The job openings span for over 2 years, focusing on construction-related jobs and is open to everyone interested, as Jun Macas, President of Australia & New Zealand Association of Employment Providers of the Philippines (ANZAEPP) said that "these jobs are not exclusively for Filipinos."
